Then, in the fourth grade, Steve met a wonderful teacher, Imogene Teddy Hill. Within a few weeks, Mrs. Hill sized up this unusual student. She even offered Steve a sweet bargain: If he could finish a math workbook on his own and get at least 80 % right , she would give him five dollars and a giant lollipop. Later Steve recalls , " I'm 100 % sure that if it hadn't been for Mrs. Hill in the fourth grade and a few others, I would absolutely have ended up in jail." Mrs. Hill was indeed "one of the saints" in his life.
