I teach physical education, art and music at an elementary school on (1)the island of Efate in the
Republic of Vanuatu-called the true South Pacific paradise.
My first impression of the village I now live in was: "(2)there's nothing here." I have to collect

became a source of joy. And you feel relaxed under the kerosene lamp on dark, lonely nights. A
trip to the beach was all you needed to catch fish. All kinds of fruit were there for taking if you just
went out into the woods.
(6)The biggest reason for my change of heart, however, was the people who live in Vanuatu.
They are warm, kind and also very strong. They live pleasantly in nature by helping each other.
(A)Children learn a lot of things from such warmhearted people, and grow up to be friendly.
While I have been here as a volunteer to teach schoolchildren, I've probably learned more from
the local people than they (7) have from me. (B)My goal now is to make the best use of this

私は南太平洋の真の楽園と呼ばれるバヌアツ共和国エファテ島の小学校で体育と
美術と音楽を教えている。私が今住んでいる村の第一印象は「ここには何もない」
だった。飲料水は雨水から集めなければならないし、日が暮れると灯油ランプが
唯一の光源だ。地元の商店では肉も果物も売っていないので、一時は米とパン
しか食べなかったことから体重が10キロ減った。しかし、1、2ヵ月ここに滞在して
ここは日本では体験できると夢にも思えない素晴らしいものに満ち溢れたまさにパラダ
イスだと感じ始めた。最初この心境の変化は私にも謎だった。それはおそらく私が
ここの生活をよく知るようになったからだろう。午後遅い時間に入った日向水で水浴
びすることが至福の源となった。暗い一人の夜に灯油ランプの下でくつろぎを感じる。
ビーチへと足を伸ばすだけで風を捕まえることができた。少し盛りに入ると、そこにはあら
ゆる種類の果物がなっていて取って食べることができた。しかし、私の心境の変化の最大
の理由は、バヌアツに暮らす人々だった。バヌアツの人は温かく、親切でまたとても強い。
子供達はこのような心の温かい人々から多くのことを学び、親切な大人へと成長する。
私はここでボランティアとして学校で子供達に教えているが、子供達が私から学んでいるより
さらに多くのことをおそらく私は地元の人々から学んできただろう。今の私の目標は日本
の学校でこの経験を最大限に生かすことだ。
