1 For the first time in history, a major disease might soon be eliminated without the
use of drugs. The Carter Center, an organization run by former US President Jimmy
Carter, has predicted that the Guinea worm* disease will be the first parasitic disease
to be (1) eradicated and the first disease to be (1) eradicated without the use of vaccines
s or medical treatment. The Guinea worm is (2)a parasite, which is an organism or
creature that lives on or in another organism or creature. People get Guinea worm
disease by drinking dirty, contaminated water. After drinking contaminated water, the
worms grow in the body for about a year. Once they have grown, they emerge slowly
from the body often around the foot area. It can take weeks for the worm to fully
10 emerge. And during this time, the victim is in great pain, making it almost impossible
for the victim to work, move around or go about their lives.
2 But the Guinea worm can now only be found in a few African countries, thanks to
a 22-year fight against the disease led by the Carter Center. Carter was moved when
he saw its victims in Africa. "It was a horrible disease, almost indescribably bad. It
is was an ancient disease and it didn't seem to have any solution. (3) It was almost an
impossible problem, so that's why we decided to try to solve it."
3 The strategy to eliminate this disease has been consistent: (4) public education.
Previously, villagers thought the disease came from witchcraft, or from eating bad
meat. ( 5 ), now they know that it comes from the ponds, where they get their
20 drinking water. This disease has tormented villagers for thousands of years and it will
soon be eliminated by educating the villagers and teaching them to use very simple
water filters. In 1986, there were an estimated 3.5 million cases of Guinea worm in
21 countries in Africa and Asia. In 2012, there were only 512 documented cases in
four countries in sub-Saharan Africa. The Carter Center, along with the US chemical
25 company Dupont, developed a fine cloth filter which was effective and could be made
and distributed cheaply. (6)By filtering all the village drinking water through these fine
cloths, the villagers were able to stop the worms from entering the human body.
