科学者の1人は、「もしはやぶさがこれらの目標を達成すれば、他
のどんな宇宙船も今までやったことがないような偉業を達成
したことになるだろう」と述べました。
イトカワに到着することは難しいものでしたが、短時間だけ着
陸し、土のサンプルを集めることはほとんど不可能でした。着陸
する第1回目の試みで、はやぶさは損傷を受けました。1週間後
再度挑戦しました。今度は、着陸し、サンプルを集めることができました。
はやぶさは地球への帰還の途につきました。しかし、ほとんど間
もなく、燃料が漏れ始め、電池は底をつき始めました。チームは
何とかこうした問題を解決できましたが、数日後、事態はずっと
悪くなりました。
